A while ago I saw a cute card embellished with a row of little flags/banners across it. The little banners were cut from a variety of patterned designer papers. It inspired me to use MDS to create my own custom mini banners, and I had so much fun because MDS offered me so many more pattern choices, and allowed me to vary the zoom on each to accommodate each little 1 1/4 x 1/2 inch banner in my rows. My first batch is printed and ready for you to buy for embellishing your own cards and projects!
A 4 1/4" long row (half a full strip) is only a quarter (plus mailing)! You can also buy them in full strips or a page with six strips on it. Trim them as you desire, adhere them to cardstock if you need more body, sponge the edges, stamp or emboss on them, once you have them you can get creative!
Here is a sample of what you will find on my Boutique page:

It has taken me longer than I hoped to get the photos displayed the way I wanted, but there are now more than 30 retired stamp sets (a few rare ones!) on my Boutique page for your shopping fun! They are at the bottom of the page, so scroll down, down, down - and take a look at everything else on the way to them!
Also new in my Boutique are my latest creations, Mini Book-ring Albums. I absolutely love these for writing down special words and thoughts, or you can put a little picture. There are two autumn inspired thankfulness albums, and two for wishes during the winter and holiday season.
I have more designs to come, but you can contact me any time to pre-order or commission a custom theme. I listed a bunch of starter ideas for these albums above the photos. Let me know what you think!

Here are a couple more MDS Halloween cards I designed. I just did the one with the photo today after seeing that photo of a spider a friend posted on Facebook. Anyone know anything about that type of spider? She thinks it bit her! It is such a cool picture I had to use it on a Halloween card.

I love that the spider is almost camouflaged in the center of this photo; can you find it? The background is actually two layers - Textured Pumpkin Pie on the bottom, with a page layer of lowered opacity, recolored (green to orange) Frightful Sight DSP over it. A couple of stamps: splatter and "eeek!" and ripping the top and bottom edges of the photo (digital ripping, of course!)

More fun with the Witches' Brew DSP! "Spooky" is a stampbrush image, and "Times" I typed as text with a similar font. The bats are part of the DSP, but the splatters and spider web are stamps. The background is Night and Day DSP.

So, I have not been able to stamp, digi-create or post lately. I am still in California (as previously posted I will be until 10/23) and this week a cousin and a good friend of my Mom and me are here too. Today we all went on a "Mystery Tour" which ended up being to some cool historic spots in downtown L.A. - and on our way home the last stop was to "Donut Friend" where unusual donuts are created. We were served one of the specialties called "Jets to Basil" which is a split donut spread with goat cheese, strawberry jam and some fresh basil, sugar glazed and drizzled with a balsamic reduction. It was CRAZY GOOD! I was already stuffed from our buffet lunch at the famous Biltmore Hotel (we are talking jumbo shrimp, crab legs, chilean sea bass, just to mention a few of the items and not even start on the desserts!). I did not take a photo of my donut because I was too busy eating it, but got this photo of the same one on the internet:
I can't give you one of these donuts, but you can enter to win some blog candy on my "Holiday Catalog Inspirations" page, and also the big blog-hop treasure hunt is still on - US residents can win $150 in Stampin' Up! products! Visit the Treasure Hunt page for details, then search for my CLUE post!

I am so excited to at long last have launched my "Boutique and Custom Made Creations" page! This is where I will post items for sale including cards & other things I have made as well as retired products inc. stamps.
I also offer many services including creating custom items for you.
To launch my new page I started with posting all the ovarian and breast cancer awareness cards I created with My Digital Studio. These are shown as they appear upon printing, however some have the option to have some glitz or bling added.
I will keep adding items to this page (and pinning them to my Pinterest boards). I'll post a notice when I add something so my email followers will get a heads up, as it appears you don't get any notice if I add to or edit a page.
Please visit my Boutique and leave me a comment!

MDS users start up your happy dance! The new update for your program will give you the ability to CUSTOMIZE your toolbar! Want that "Save" button back up there? You got it! How about the "Align" button? Yep, you can put that one up there too, or not! Whatever you want! Just point your cursor on the toolbar area, right click, select "Customize Toolbar" from the popup menu, then start customizing!

Here is some MDS inspiration to get you going! I created this all-digital Halloween card that features the scrumptiously scary "Witches' Brew" designer paper, with "Howlstooth & Scaringbone" paper in the background. Some stitching, pompoms, stamps and a label decorate it! If you don't have My Digital Studio yet, the upcoming holiday season makes this the perfect time to get started so you can create your own custom holiday decor, cards and gifts!

Heidi Weaver, a fellow Stampin' Up! demonstrator, created this awesome banner for fall and Thanksgiving and I cannot wait to make my own version! I will have to wait before I can get started, however, because I am visiting my Mom in California and won't be back home until October 23...I brought some Stampin' stuff with me but not my Build a Banner kit. YOU can get started any time however! From the Holiday Catalog you'll need the banner kit and Burlap Ribbon, from the Annual Catalog you need the Autumn Accents leaf shapes die and Labels Framelits (and the Big Shot). You can make rosettes with the die or "from scratch" with the scoring tool. Finishing touches are the bitty safety pins in the Vintage Trinkets and Naturals Buttons. Of course, you'll need some assorted fall color ink pads and sponges or daubers.
I'd love to see your banner creations using the Build A Banner kit so please email your photos to me - I might post some here!

I have added three more blogs to positions #67, 68 and 69 --- and I also added again the last batch because for some reason they were not there, so my apologies! I believe this time they "stuck" and hopefully will stay there. Don't forget to go to my Holiday Catalog Inspirations page and leave a comment on that page to enter to win some blog candy in addition to the Treasure Hunt!

I created this treat collection way back in 2008 so the stamps and most of the punches are all retired...but the ideas here can easily be done with current stamps and/or MDS! The round ones are peppermint patties.

I call this card "Spooky Night" and even though I made it in 2011, everything I used is still current, except the glossy card stock. You should be able to do it on Whisper White however, as another demo assured me we can do the Polished Stone technique on Whisper White. To do that background technique, just dampen a cotton ball with rubbing alcohol, put 2 to 3 drops each of two or three ink colors (see below for the colors I think I used) then dab, dab, dab that inked cotton ball all over your cardstock panel! The alcohol dries quickly, and once dry you can stamp over it. I stamped the trees with Versamark, embossed with white embossing powder, then stamped them again and embossed with black powder. Oh, you are wondering about the moon??? Well, I didn't put much polished stone in that area so I could take a punched-out circle to sponge on the Versamark (in the negative space, but you figured that out already, right?) then emboss with white powder. You can also do this as a resist technique - do your stamping and embossing first, then dab the polished stone effect over the images, wipe excess ink from the embossed parts with a tissue.

Lovely As A Tree stamp set:
128655 ($27.95) Wood Mount OR 127793 ($19.95) Clear Mount
Versamark Ink Pad 102283 ($7.50); White Embossing Powder 109132 ($4.75);
Black Embossing Powder 109133 ($4.75); Refill inks ($2.95 e.) - Pumpkin Pie105229;
Perfect Plum 102107; Elegant Eggplant 105222;
(Black and Pumpkin Pie cardstock layers)

When is a snowman a Jack O Lantern? When you think outside the box using a Stampin' Up! stamp! My stack of Jack O Lanterns was stamped with Pumpkin Pie ink and the snowman base stamp image from the  Snow Day set in the Holiday Catalog. I sketched the mouths and cut them out along with free-hand cut bits to use as masking pieces for the faces. I inked the stamp, lay the pieces on it and pressed them down gently (use a tool such as tweezers or a pencil tip) to lift off the ink, huffed on my inky stamp & stamped on Whisper White cardstock. I colored in those areas with a Crushed Curry marker, then outlined with Cajun Craze. I used part of the carrot nose from the same set to stamp the stem with Garden Green. After you stamp and color your pumpkins, cut out the stack and sponge the left side with Crushed Curry, the right with Cajun Craze (lightly) and then sponge black on the edges. In my second photo you can see how I used masks to sponge my Baked Brown Sugar card base with Crushed Curry and Basic Black, as well as how I layed out my Bird Punch punched branches of Garden Green and Cajun Craze. The pumpkins are adhered last with Dimensionals.
The border is  made of strips of Cajun Craze, Crushed Curry and Basic Black that I texturized on the Big Shot with the Chevron Embossing Folder, then trimmed to layer together. The sentiment is also from a Holiday Catalog set: Halloween Hello, and it is embossed with Black embossing powder and sponged with Crushed Curry ink.

Snow Day 131892 ($26.95) Wood mount OR 131895 ($18.950 Clear mount
Halloween Hello 131718 ($18.95) Wood mount OR 131721 ($14.95) Clear mount
Chevron Texture Embossing Folder 127749 ($7.95)
Bird Builder Punch 117191 ($16.95)
Inks available in pads, markers and refills:
Pumpkin Pie, Cajun Craze, Crushed Curry, Basic Black
Cardstock colors:
Cajun Craze, Crushed Curry, Basic Black, Baked Brown Sugar,
Garden Green, Whisper White

To create the background for the pumpkins, stamp and cut out a copy of the snowman base image on scrap paper so that you have TWO masks (the shape and the negative shape or outline left after you cut out the shape).
Position the shape cutout where your pumpkins will go and sponge black ink around the cutout mask with a light-handed daubing application to get a textured look in your sponging. Switch to the negative space mask and use a rubbing application to sponge Crushed Curry ink on the left hand side of the shape area you created with the black ink.

More blogs to check out! Please add the blogs added to positions #63, 64, 65 and 66 to your list and visit them - they will really appreciate it if you leave a comment too! You should have heard the cheering when this new product was introduced at Convention! With this new tool you can make an envelope for any size card, and all the measurements have been done for you! Just find the size of your card on the tool to see the corresponding dimensions for your envelope, score, punch, fold and glue - done! The best part is that it is so affordable at only $19.95! (And maybe you will also want to use the Envelope Liners Framelits to add coordinated liners to your envelopes...)
Watch the video to see how it works!
Envelope Punch Board #13374 ($19.95)
October 12, 2013 update from Stampin' Up!

We have noticed that one of the envelope measurements on the Envelope Punch Board is incorrect. The dimensions for the 5-1/2" x 8" card size envelope are 1/4" too small. The correct envelope measurement for this card size is: 10-5/8" x 10-5/8" (paper size); 4-3/8" (score line). The Envelope Punch Board still functions perfectly and we have corrected the measurement chart on the punch board. New labels are available through Demonstrator Support, if you would like one.
Special reminder for Stampin' Up! cards: These envelope measurements are meant for simple cards, without a lot of dimension. At Stampin' Up! we love adding dimension to our cards, but that can make the envelope a bit snug. So, if you need an envelope to fit your cards with lots of flair, go up an envelope size (or two) for the perfect fit. Please contact me if you would like me to get one of the labels (mentioned above) for you.

I am always trying to think of how I can use my stamps in ways that are beyond the obvious. I love the texture of the background pattern stamp in the Holiday Catalog set "Truly Grateful" and thought of doing something in black and white with it. Creating the card below for the Holiday Catalog swap took me out of my usual comfort zone both in my color palette and in the design. It was also my first design using the chalkboard technique that is so popular now.

Truly Grateful set in the Holiday Catalog 131730 (Wood Mount) $27.95
or 131733 (Clear Mount) $18.85
(Complete set is shown below)
1" Stitched Edge Cherry Cobbler Grosgrain Ribbon
(Holiday Catalog, pg. 22) 132135 $8.95
Yippee Skippee stamp set (Annual Catalog) 131341 (Wood Mount) $18.95
or 131344 (Clear Mount) $14.95
Other materials: Versamark Ink, Black Embossing Powder, Heat Tool,
White Craft Ink, Basic Black, Whisper White and Cherry Cobbler Cardstocks,
Distressing Tool

I got this lovely card in the mail today from my wonderful mother who recently bought the Autumn Accents die that cuts out leaves and an acorn shape. I don't know where she found the metallic paper originally (she has quite a collection of papers) but it is not Stampin' Up! so you won't find it in our product line...however, the Champagne Glimmer Paper could be used instead to create a similar and equally stunning and shiny effect!
Enclosed in the card was $20 for me to reload my Starbucks card! Thanks Mom!!! I love you!

I designed this hybrid card for my friend's Stampin' Baby Shower, although the original version we made was a bit simpler. I decided to use the same design for one of my Convention swaps and to meet the swap requirements I had to step it up. The original borders were straight-edged; in this version I cut them with the Finishing Touches Edgelits (with the big Shot). I also added the knot of our new Pear Pizzazz color of 3/8" Taffeta Ribbon.
All the images were created in My Digital Studio with the Forest Friends stampbrush set. I punched the deer head portrait with the Wide Oval Punch and layered it on Early Espresso punched with the Decorative Label. The sentiment, from the Cuddles and Kisses set, is embossed with White Embossing Powder.

Sunday, August 11, 2013

Stampin' Up! challenged us to bring to Convention a hand-stamped, ready-to-mail, greeting card so we could set a new World Record for the most hand-stamped greeting cards mailed from a single location at the same time. I made this card to thank my mom for financing my trip to Convention. There was a rep from Guiness at Convention checking in each of our cards to be mailed and we did set a record!
I used the "By the Tide" set for this card. I sprayed water on a panel of our Shimmery White Cardstock then dripped inks from Bermuda Bay, Pool Party, and Soft Sky reinker bottles to create the watery-looking background. After it dried, I stamped and embossed the coral fan twice with White and Gold embossing powders. I layered that on a Baked Brown Sugar panel stamped with the script and coral fan images in the same color and Metallic Gold, and sponged the edges. I took a piece of Crumb Cake Seam Binding Ribbon, wet and crumpled it, then when it dried I wrapped it around the panel. Everything was layered on Coastal Cabana stamped with Baked Brown Sugar. The shell was also stamped with Baked Brown Sugar as well as embossed with Iridescent Ice powder, then watercolored with Blushing Bride and Pool Party, cut out and attached with Dimensionals.

Now is the time to subscribe to this blog so you won't miss out when the upcoming Fall Treasure Hunt begins! By the end of the month all the Stampin' Up! Demonstrators participating will have signed up and we'll know the value of the prize - the winners will get to order whatever they want to the value of the prize! There will be a winner in each of three regions - US, Canada and Great Britain! The contest is fun and easy - I'll be posting a list of the participating demonstrators' blog addresses. Each blog will have a "clue" posted...don't worry, we WANT you to find the clues on the blogs so you should have no trouble finding the clues when you visit each blog. Make a list of the clues and blogs where you find each one, send your list to me when you are done and I will send it on to your region's coordinator to enter you in the drawing. You only have to send your entry to one demonstrator, so if I'm your demo you send it to me!
Stay tuned and don't miss out!

If you would like a Word document version of this 9-page photo tutorial, and you are either subscribed to this blog or you are a Stampin' Up! Demonstrator, please email me or post a comment here!

On the cardinal instructions, note that you should color the black area on the bird's face BEFORE you glue on the beak. I realized I didn't write that clearly and I think I would have to reload all the photos on this post to replace this last one and keep it in the right order. Still learning all about blog editing! Thanks for bearing with me!

Sunday, June 2, 2013

I'm getting started on my projects for swapping at Convention in July (woo-hoo! 25th Anniversay of SU!) and created this card design today. I love it and I think you will too so it will be one of the cards we'll make at my next stampcamp! My events calender is on my SU! website (where my store is) so check out the dates and deadlines at www.suzannejohnson.stampinup.net

I am not sure this photo does justice to the lovely Pool Party shade of aqua blue, however it contrasts beautifully with Basic Black in this design. To make this card I used those colors in cardstock and ink plus the following Stampin' Up! tools:
  • Elegant Butterfly Punch (#127526, $15.95) which coordinates with the...
  • Papillon Potpourri stamp set (#123759 Clear Mount $14.95; #132058 Wood Mount $18.95)
  • Bitty Butterfly Punch (#129406, $15.95)
  • Decorative Label Punch (#120907, $16.95)
  • Perfect Polka Dots Embossing Folder* (#117335, $7.95)
  • Fancy Fan Embossing Folder* (#127751, $7.95)
  • *The Big Shot Die-Cutting Machine (with the embossing folders) (#113439, $99.95)
  • Basic Pearls (#119247, $4.95 for 150 multi-size, self-adhesive pearl jewel embellishments)
  • Stampin' Dimensionals (#104430, $3.95 for 300)
  • Stampin' Sponges (#101610, #3.50 for 3 sponges; TIP: cut each sponge into 6 or 8 wedges!)
I cut a 4 1/4" x 5 1/2" piece of Basic Black cardstock for the background of this card front, then embossed it with the Fancy Fan Embossing Folder. I flipped it so the smooth side was on top for this card, and the finished card front will be adhered to a folded white card.
I punched two Bitty Butterflies and one Decorative Label from Basic Black cardstock and glued those to a 2" x 5 1/2" Pool Party panel, then ran it through the Big Shot in the Perfect Polka Dots Embossing Folder, and lastly adhered it to the embossed black background panel.
I stamped the floral butterfly with Basic Black Ink on Pool Party cardstock and punched it out with the Elegant Butterfly punch. For more dimension, I sponged the edges with Pool Party ink and put Stampin' Dimensionals on the back of the wings. For the best dimension, I cut three Dimensionals in half, layered the halves of two for a double thickness and put those on the top of each wing, then put the last two halves on the bottom parts of the wings. The half-dimensional shape fits nicely on the back of both wing sections (better than a whole Dimensional would). After sticking it onto the label shape on the card, I added three of the Basic Pearls (two of the tiniest and one of the next size up). Voila!

This is a variation using Delightful Daffodil and a different butterfly from the same Papillion Potpourri set. I added a little Calypso Coral coloring to the butterfly and a Basic Rhinestone instead of Basic Pearls.
